The society began in 1961 in England as the Inscape group of artists meeting together in an informal way to work and exhibit together, to study with a subjects, and revive some of the forgotten crafts of painting. They took their name from a word invented by the poet Gerard Manley Hopkins meaning 'Inner Landscape'.They were inspired by the work and teaching of Prof. Ernst Fuchs, founder of the Vienna School of Fantastic Realism.
